Corners Community Book Club
Nationally, fewer than 20% of Black boys in 4th grade read on grade level, and only 14% meet grade-level expectations in math. Locally, Stamford’s i-Ready data reflects similar disparities, highlighting persistent opportunity gaps that disproportionately impact Black boys. In response, Corners Community launched the Corners Book Club, a culturally responsive literacy initiative designed to support Black boys in 4th and 5th grade who are performing below grade level in reading. The Book Club provides a consistent, supportive space where students build reading skills, confidence, and a love for learning through shared stories and guided discussion. We are currently in our second cohort of the Corners Book Club, building on the success of our pilot and in direct response to feedback from parents and caregivers. Our inaugural cohort centered on the Corners Baseball Team, an all-Black team of 13 boys from Stamford, Connecticut. Through this work, we identified urgent academic needs:
10 out of 13 boys are reading far below grade level
Several 5th graders are reading at a late Grade 3 to early Grade 4 level
Many 4th graders are reading at a Grade 1–2 level
Students are receiving in-school interventions, yet gaps persist
The Book Club intentionally meets students where they are, using small-group reading, discussion, and culturally relevant texts to strengthen foundational literacy skills while fostering identity, connection, and confidence. Our first cohort read The Hero Two Doors Down, a story that sparked meaningful conversations about friendship, courage, and Black history. In addition, students explored a children’s book on Kwanzaa, reinforcing cultural pride, values, and traditions while strengthening comprehension and vocabulary. The Corners Book Club reflects our belief that literacy is not just about reading — it is about belonging, representation, and possibility. By creating a trusted, community-based learning environment, Corners Community is helping Black boys grow as readers, thinkers, and leaders.
